Matthew Borret The Dream Designer

Matthew Borret Is A Brilliant Canadian Illustrator Who Studied His Craft In The Ontario College Of Art & Design. Born In 1972, Mathew Grew Up In Rural Quebec And Ontario Surrounded By Horses And Hay. Despite Allergies To Both, He Constructed Elaborate Hay Forts And Did A Bit Of Horse Riding, But When The Air Was Particularly Heavy With Pollen He’d More Likely Hole Up In His Room Drawing, Building Elaborate Things With Lego, And Making Primitive Computer Graphics On His Commodore 64.

Mathew Moved To Toronto To Attend The Ontario College Of Art & Design In 1993, Where He Studied Illustration. He Currently Works In Visual Effects For TV And Film, And Does The Occasional Illustration.
In School, Mathew Made Every Class Into Art Class By Filling His Notebooks With Drawings And Doodles.

After Graduating From The Illustration Program At The Ontario College Of Art & Design In 1998 He Ultimately Realized He’d Stopped Drawing For Himself. That Didn’t Seem A Fit Situation So He Went Back To Basics And Started Doodling In Sketchbooks. A Childhood Abundance Of Lego And Commodore 64 Video Games, A Charm With Maps And Architecture, A Fondness For Detail, And Inveterate Dreams Of Finding Strange Hidden Rooms In His House, Led To The Drawings He Made.

He Is A Visual Effect Artist Who Creates Wild And Sometimes Elaborate Imagined Structures, Some Underground, Some In Cityscapes. His Underground Structures, With Their Maze-like And Escher Influenced Explorations Of Separated Space, May Have Developed Out Of His More Traditional Architectural Subjects, Some Of Which Feature Cut-away Sections. The Drawings Section Of His Website Collection Has Selections From The “Room Series”, Done With Pigma Micron Ink Marker Pens, As Well As Pencil Drawings And Other Ink Drawings. The “Illustrations” Section Has Some Of His More Traditional Illustration Work.

Mathew Borrett’s “Room Series” Is Exceptionally Evocative Of M. C. Escher’s Drawings Of Impossible, Mind-bending Architectural Spaces. Borrett’s Drawings Creating Bizarre, Peculiarly Displaced Structures Forming A Dreamy World Of Nightmares And Fantasies That Have An Assortment Of Details To Draw You In And Out Of The Various Rooms, Exploring Their Relationships And Potential Narratives.
